Constant companion

When I was a kid my favourite TV show was Lassie, that faithful, loyal and loving dog engendered in me all of the qualities I would grow to admire in people.

Because of that show I vowed I would become a Collie Rough owner and I have been lucky enough to have loved five. Four of those dogs are now dust, yet they still rest in our home and in our hearts and I have never been able to completely let them go.

I still have Kai and he is a “pets as therapy” dog and he brings joy and happiness to all who caress him.

It is my wish that when I die, the ashes of one of my four legged companions be placed by my side in my coffin to keep me company throughout my final journey.

When it came to searching for my life partner, loyal, loving, caring and gentle were all attributes I desired.

Meeting and marrying the man of my dreams was the best thing that ever happened to me. I have given the old “in sickness and in health” vow a workout but regardless of my illness he has remained faithfully by my side.

I often feel shrouded in guilt because it is my thought that I am holding him back from enjoying a life full of greater opportunities.

I have changed! My mind and body bear the battle scars of my illness but he has never once made me feel like he feels anything other than love and affection toward me.

I need to take a leaf out of his book and be more accommodating and accepting of the changes within myself.

I have mentioned having the support of many through this chapter in my life, but I can honestly say that without him this blog would have finished abruptly many stories ago.

The man I love has kept my feet on the ground, our family together and made our house a loving home. He is the reason I wake up each day!

He is the blood in my veins, the air that I breathe, the spirit in my soul and the passion in my heart!
